FSSAI Mandates E-Commerce Food Deliveries With Minimum 45-Day Shelf Life

Ensuring Extended Shelf Life for Consumer Safety

In a recent directive, the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) instructed e-commerce platforms selling food items to ensure that products reach consumers with at least 30% of their shelf life remaining, or a minimum of 45 days before expiration. This move, announced on November 12, 2024, followed a meeting with e-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs), prompted by growing consumer concerns about expired or near-expired products being delivered.

Enhanced Compliance and Label Transparency

During the meeting, Mr. Rao, CEO of FSSAI, emphasized the importance of transparency and accuracy in online food listings. He clarified that product descriptions on e-commerce sites must match the information on product labels and meet FSSAI’s Labelling and Display Regulations. This requirement aims to protect consumers by ensuring they have access to reliable and accurate information about the food items they purchase.

Mandatory Licensing and Food Safety Training for Delivery Personnel

Mr. Rao highlighted the role of FBOs in consumer health protection, stressing that only licensed FBOs may operate on e-commerce platforms. He also mandated proper food safety and hygiene training for delivery personnel to improve food handling. Additionally, he emphasized that food and non-food items should be delivered separately to prevent cross-contamination risks.

Strengthening Surveillance and Enforcement Measures

To support these mandates, FSSAI has instructed state authorities to increase inspections in e-commerce warehouses and enforce stringent Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for delivery personnel. The 45th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting on November 7 urged states and Union Territories to enhance surveillance efforts, particularly in warehouses and high-tourist locations, for the busy season. Mobile Food Safety on Wheels vans will also monitor and ensure compliance.

With over 200 participants in attendance, the FSSAI reinforced its commitment to a transparent and compliant digital food marketplace that prioritizes consumer health and safety.
