Synthetic Dyes Found in Cakes
Current Tax Structure and Industry Growth
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has flagged the use of harmful colouring agents in bakery products, especially cakes in Karnataka. Recent tests revealed the presence of Allura red, a synthetic dye, in some cake samples collected by FSSAI officials. After noticing unusually dark colours in cakes sold in the market, the officials decided to conduct the tests.
Health Risks of Synthetic Colours
According to health experts, using synthetic dyes like Allura red poses significant health risks. These dyes are commonly used in red velvet and pineapple cakes to enhance their visual appeal. However, prolonged consumption can lead to health issues such as asthma, allergies, and even long-term risks like cancer, especially in children and young adults.
Bakers’ Practices and Legal Action
While many bakers use permitted natural colours, some resort to synthetic alternatives for a more attractive appearance. FSSAI officials emphasized that only a small number of samples tested positive for harmful colouring agents, and legal action is being taken against those bakeries found in violation of safety standards. Despite these findings, officials assured the public that there is no need for panic or immediate concerns about bakery products.
