FSSAI to Develop SOP for Food Delivery via Quick Commerce and E-Commerce Platforms

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is set to create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure food safety compliance across the entire supply chain of online food delivery platforms, including quick commerce and e-commerce services. The initiative is aimed at defining specific parameters to guarantee food quality and hygiene throughout the process, from packaging to delivery.

Key Areas of Focus in SOP Development

Packaging and Handling of Food ProductsThe SOP will define standards for packaging food products to ensure they are safe during transit and delivery. It will also address proper handling during storage at warehouses and in transportation, to avoid contamination or spoilage. Hygiene Practices for Delivery PersonnelFSSAI will emphasize hygiene protocols for food delivery personnel, ensuring they maintain cleanliness during deliveries to prevent contamination of food. Transportation and Weather ConditionsThe SOP will set guidelines for the safe transportation of food, including measures to address food safety in various weather conditions, ensuring food remains safe until it reaches the consumer.

      Strengthening Surveillance

FSSAI has directed state and Union Territory food safety commissioners to enhance the surveillance of warehouses and facilities used by e-commerce platforms. These efforts are aimed at ensuring food safety compliance at every stage of the supply chain, including storage and handling at e-commerce and quick commerce warehouses.

          Addressing Concerns and Stakeholder Consultation

FSSAI has received several complaints regarding food safety violations in quick commerce and e-commerce, including the sale of near-expiry products and inadequate labeling of best-before dates. In response, FSSAI is consulting with stakeholders from across the supply chain to formulate the SOP, which will undergo expert review before finalization.
