The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is taking steps to expand its reach by encouraging more states to adopt mandatory procurement through the platform. Speaking at a recent event, CEO P. K. Singh highlighted that GeM has already transformed public procurement by making it more transparent, competitive, and cost-efficient. Currently, 22 states have integrated their procurement systems with GeM, while others are in various stages of onboarding.
Singh emphasized that mandating procurement via GeM helps eliminate middlemen, reduce costs, and ensure direct dealings with verified suppliers. He pointed out that the platform has registered transactions worth over ₹6 lakh crore since its inception, with savings of up to 10% in public spending.
To further strengthen adoption, GeM is working on integrating advanced analytics, AI-based vendor matching, and simplified workflows for smaller government bodies. Efforts are also being made to expand the supplier base, particularly targeting MSMEs, women entrepreneurs, and startups.
Singh noted that the success of GeM lies in its ability to create a level playing field for suppliers across the country while ensuring quality and timely delivery. By bringing more states on board with mandatory usage, the platform aims to establish itself as the default procurement system for all government entities in India, setting a new benchmark in public sector efficiency and accountability.
