Comprehensive Training for Food Handlers
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has set an ambitious target to train 2.5 million food handlers by March 2026. This initiative will focus on ensuring hygienically handled and safe food in establishments such as universities, college, and hostel canteens.
Focus Areas of the 45th Central Advisory Committee Meeting
During its 45th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting, chaired by CEO G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, FSSAI highlighted the importance of regular food safety surveillance. The meeting emphasized training Food Business Operators (FBOs) nationwide under the Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) program.
Enhanced Surveillance and SOPs for E-commerce
State food commissioners were instructed to strengthen surveillance at warehouses, especially those used by e-commerce platforms, with specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for facilities and delivery personnel. The initiative also includes deploying Food Safety on Wheels mobile units to collect surveillance samples at strategic locations.
Boosting Food Safety at Tourist Destinations
With the tourist season approaching, states were directed to heighten food safety measures at popular destinations. This involves ramping up sampling, inspections, and consumer awareness initiatives to ensure higher safety standards.
Integrated Food Safety Approach and Consumer Engagement
FSSAI stressed the need for collaboration among ministries, stakeholders, and states to adopt an integrated food safety approach. Advisory committee meetings at state and district levels will be held regularly to bolster this ecosystem. Public engagement initiatives such as fairs, walkathons, and street plays under the Eat Right India movement were encouraged to promote healthier eating habits.
Global Collaboration on Food Safety
The regulator continues to interact with states and global stakeholders to strengthen food safety systems. Notably, the Global Food Regulators Summit 2024 aimed to establish a global platform for enhancing food safety and aligning with international standards.
