Benefits Of TAN Registration

A Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is a mandatory 10-digit alphanumeric number required for all persons responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source (TDS/TCS). It ensures your business remains compliant with the Income Tax Department's regulations.

Legal Compliance for TDS

TAN is legally mandatory for anyone deducting tax at source. It is required to be quoted in all TDS/TCS returns, payment challenges, and certificates to avoid heavy statutory penalties.

Seamless Return Filing

With a valid TAN, businesses can easily file their quarterly TDS returns. It acts as a unique identifier that ensures the tax deducted by you is correctly credited to the deductee's account.

Avoids Financial Penalties

Failure to apply for TAN or failure to quote it in documents can attract significant fines. Registration ensures your business operations are smooth and protected from unnecessary legal friction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TAN?

+

TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department. It is mandatory for all persons or entities responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source (TDS/TCS) under the Income Tax Act.

What is TDS and TCS?

+

TDS stands for Tax Deducted at Source and TCS stands for Tax Collected at Source. These are mechanisms through which tax is deducted or collected directly by the payer or seller and deposited to the government on behalf of the payee or buyer, ensuring timely tax collection.

What is the validity of TAN?

+

Once issued, a TAN remains valid for lifetime. There is no requirement for renewal, re-application, or periodic updating unless there are changes in the deductor/collector details (in which case a correction request can be filed).

How to apply for TAN in India?

+

You can apply for TAN online through the official NSDL (Protean) TIN website by filling Form 49B, or offline by submitting the physical Form 49B at any authorized TIN Facilitation Centre (TIN-FC). The online process is faster and widely recommended.

What is the penalty for not obtaining or quoting TAN correctly?

+

Failure to obtain a TAN when required, or quoting an incorrect/invalid TAN, can attract a penalty of ₹10,000 under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act. Additional consequences may include disallowance of TDS credits and interest on late deposits.

Can a person or entity have multiple TANs?

+

No, it is not permitted to hold multiple TANs. Every deductor/collector is allowed only one TAN. If multiple TANs have been allotted by mistake, the additional TANs must be surrendered immediately to avoid compliance issues.

Is TAN mandatory for all businesses?

+

TAN is mandatory only for those who are liable to deduct TDS or collect TCS (e.g., employers paying salaries, companies making contractor payments, sellers collecting TCS on certain goods). Salaried individuals and small transactions below threshold limits do not require TAN.
